A long time ago, in a small village near the beach in West Sumatera, lived a woman and her son, Malin Kundang. Malin Kundang’s father had passed away when he was a baby, and he had to live hard with his mother.
Malin Kundang was a healthy, diligent, and strong child. He usually went to the sea to catch fish, and brought it to his mother, sold it in the town.
One day, when Malin Kundang was sailing as usual, he saw a merchant’s ship which was being raided by a small band of pirates. With his brave and power, Malin Kundang defeated the pirates. The merchant was so happy and asked Malin Kundang to sail with him. Malin Kundang agreed.

Malin Kundang was leaving his mother to go sailing with the merchant. His mother was with sincere hearts can not bear to give up even though her son off to go sailing. And finally Malin Kundang went away leaving the house. In the Malin Kundang heart was also not willing to leave his mother alone at home, but what may make Malin Kundang have a great desire to change his life and his mother.

A few years later. After some time did not come back to home, Malin Kundang went back to his village for just visit, but Malin Kundang not admit that an old lady who was in a small hut that is his mother. After only a few hours he visited on his village, Malin Kundang finally went away from the village and returned to his home. Now Malin Kundang already has a wife and a daughter, she married with the merchant child.
Malin Kundang mom very sad because her son forget her. His mother had a strategy in place to apply for a maid in the house so she can care for their children and always met with Malin Kundang. Malin Kundang mother eventually apply for a maid in the Malin Kundang house.
Malin's mother also received a maid. During a maid in the Malin house, Malin's mother always treated casually own. After all this time the mother became a servant in the home Malin, Malin's mother felt upset and finally ventured to confess to Malin that she is her mother. But Malin Kundang unbelieve it, after straight Malin's mother showed a birthmark in the Malin body are same with birthmark on her mother's body, Malin finally realized that it is really her mother. However, Malin continues to seduce her mother to be allowed to go sailing, and to help finance his mother. He promised when received money from fishing sailing, he would send money to his mother. Then after the market, the merchant took Malin returned to his home and will helpintroduce to the woman Malin. Malin was willing. Arriving at the house Malin asked permission to rest. The next day Malin and merchants visited the woman's house. With apolite woman meny allowing his guest into the house. then she called her father. They tell each other and chatting. Simply introducing merchant Malin with the royal children. Time after time passed Malin eventually marry women, and Malin became nobles as well aswealth-in-law. He still remembers the promise to his mother, when he already hadmoney he would send money to his mother. Every month he sends money. But what happened to her mother instead used the money to sow oats. His mother does notremember when he was still poor. Malin did not know it at that.
One day he wants to visit his mother in the village, and that's when he learned that his mother has turned into an arrogant and never help people in distress. Malin was shocked by the change of his mother, he did not think on it. Malin feels when he sends money to her mother could help the family economy, but in fact is not so in reality.
Malin very angry and disappointed, he was embarrassed to the in-laws, wife and residents about the change of the nature and attitude of his mother. Malin disappointment to her mother decided to go and apologize to his mother, when he became a rebellious child. The word says it makes Malin's mother came out of greed. His mother was immediately attracted Malin then hugged her and apologized to Malin, Malin's mother feel guilty, Malin has been working hard to help him but she did not use it well. Suddenly rain storm and lightning was finally grabbed the mother and Malin, then recording turned into crystal chunks that can glow about them when there is light. Malin Kundang was glad to hear it, he said that he would marry her and told about it with his mother. ago, Malin Kundang wanted to visit his mother who was in the village. after arriving, Malin Kundang could meet his mother. his mother was delighted and touched that Malin Kundang still remember her. There, Malin Kundang told all about his life in the city. He also told about a woman and he wanted to marry her. and Malin Kundang wanted his mother to stay with his beloved woman together in the city. Her mother couldn’t hold back tears, until the tears fell down from her cheeks. Soon, malin kundang gave her a hug and said “I love you mom, you taught me everything and thank you you were there for me to love and care for me”
After a few days stayed in the village, they decided to go and left their hometown. and they were saying goodbye to their neighbors. after arriving at the city, Malin Kundang showed all his hard work during this includes stately homes that were there.
The next day, Malin Kundang intended his mother to meet his beloved woman, she was willing. after meeting with his mother, Malin Kundang introduce the woman that he loved it. Malin Kundang’s mom also liked the candidate's of her daughter- in-law and she was willing to marry her son. all felt happy. they were preparing for their wedding party. after all was ready, they perform a wedding ceremony which was witnessed by Malin Kundang’s mother. and they lived happily ever after.

One day, Malin Kundang want to go migrate to improve their lives. The desire was rejected by his mother. Malin Kundang but still want to go wander. Finally, reluctantly removed her mother's departure Malin.
A few years later, she heard the news when Malin Kundang returned with a wife and he became a wealthy man. Mother's heart to be happy, but what happened? Malin Kundang not recognize her mother. He chased and snapped at his mother. Mother's heart was grieved to saw her son's behavior. Scolded and screamed Malin very painful then the mother's went to home.
A few days later, Malin's mother was seriously sick. Malin's friends felt pity and tell him if his mother is hard sick.To be honest Malin felt restless and every night Malin had bad dreams after heard the news of his friend. So he has the desire to saw the state of his mother.
The next day, he came to her mother's house. Saw her condition, Malin was pity. He apologized to his mother. His mother wept to saw the incident. With pleasure, his mother forgave him and they came back as it once was, lived happily like before.

Malin miss with his mother and his best friend once in the village, and Malin wanted to return home to the village as well as introducing his new family and his best friend's mother impositions. But the law does not permit member. Malin upset and agitated, until a time Malin has an idea to lie in-law of Will do business outside the Island. Fortunately Malin believe. Malin and his family go.
Arriving at the village Malin did not find mother and friend. Poorer a year ago his village had been madly in tsunami. Malin so sad and confused. She just realized the time until the harbor, she finally returned home to take the bag and sandals. after that she hurried to the harbor. when she got in town, Malin Kundang’s mother asked several people about the existence of Malin Kundang, after so much searching she finally found a Malin Kundang’s home.In the gate of Malin’s house, she was surprised and scuttled by the sound of bells ringing. But she returned again and knowing that it was only the bell that rang. She went into the house and saw Malin with his wife. She called Malin, Malin’s wife met Malin’s mother and asked, "who are you", mother Malin said: “I’m Malin’s mother". Malin wife was shocked and immediately kissed her mother's hand Malin Kundang. malin pulls his wife and said "she's not my mother '. Malin mother was shocked and crying, she finally said" I curse you to be ... "because she saw photos of handsome king, she was so wrong to speak" the king's handsome !!!!! ". Many years later, Malin Kundang became a wealthy merchant, with a huge ship, loads of trading goods, many ship crews, and a beautiful wife. In his journey, his ship landed on a beach. The villagers recognized him, and the news ran fast in the town: “Malin Kundang became a rich man and now he is here!”. His mother, in a deepful sadness after years of loneliness, ran to the beach to meet her beloved son again.
When the mother came, Malin Kundang, in front of his well dressed wife, his crews, and his own glories, denied to meet that old, poor, and dirty woman. For three times she begged Malin Kundang and for three times yelled at him. “Malin…. I’m your mother Malin. I miss you, my son.”. At last Malin Kundang said to her, “Enough, old woman! I have never had a mother like you, a dirty and ugly peasant!”. Then he pushed his mother and ordered his crews to set sail.
Enraged, the old woman prayed to the God, “Oh, my Lord. Why was my son didn’t recognize his own mother, whereas I have struggled to raise him. My Lord, please made my son believed that I was her mother.”
When Malin Kundang and his crews sailed, on the way there was a very hard storm. Fatigue, Malin Kundang slept in his room. When he slept, he dreamed. In his dream, he saw a flashback of his life. He saw how his mother struggled to raise him, how his mother struggled to find food for Malin, and how his mother smiled when Malin grew up as a healthy, strong, and diligent child. Then he saw his mother’s sadness, when Malin Kundang left her alone and he saw how he replied to all with curses and insults. Suddenly, Malin woke up after hearing the thunder. He cried. He ordered his crews to return to his mother’s village. Soon after when he arrived at the beach, he ran to his mother’s house. Arrived there, he immediately embraced his mother and apologized for any mistakes. At this very touched moment, Malin Kundang’s wife, who originally didn’t like Malin’s mother, slowly felt sorry for this situation. Malin invited his mother to return to the ship and when to the Malin’s town.
Arrived at Malin Kundang’s house, Malin’s mother cried. She was so happy because she knew that she had a grandson. At finally, they all lived together to become a happy family.

Malin decided to join the rich merchant to go to town. Before he left, he had said goodbye to his mother.
